Where to by Model Ship fittings?

I want to get into model ship building, I have some books, but most of them are from the 60's and 70's. Does anyone know where I could find supplies and parts to do this? I don't want to buy a kit, but all of the catalogues I have went out of business decades ago! websites or stores where they sell these pieces would be great. I went to the local hobby shop nearby, but their selection was very limited and quite expensive
