Can i use my last name with hyphen if my birth certificate doesn't have it?

i have two last names and my birth certificate has them with a space. Here, in the US, they think that one of them might be my middle name if i put a space between my two last names, i don't have a middle name though. can i put a hyphen to my two last names? or would that be totally wrong?
